NASCAR RULES AND REGULATIONS
Championship Point System:
The driver points are allotted for each race based on two concepts for all the NASCAR series Championships: Laps Led and Final Position. Three different scales present for the points related to position. 185 points for the first place in addition with fifteen points that separates the first from the second. The least for a winner to grab is 190 points. Therefore, it is not possible to win a race without a lead in a lap.
Drivers Points:
The driver who initiates the race is appointed with the driver’s points. The exchanged driver does not get the points, although, it is legal to replace the driver in a race. In the 2004 Nextel Cup race, when Dale Earnhardt, Jr. was replaced by Martin Truex, Jr. at the New Hampshire International Speedway, Earnhardt earned all the points. The owner of the car also gets points. The owner and driver points are quite same for a car that makes the field. The owner points are gained by the cars that fail to qualify for a race that depends on how sufficiently they have qualified. If the weather conditions make it impossible to qualify, the owner points can be used to set the order for the race to start. The owner points from the previous year are considered for the first five races in every year.
NASCAR Points System Development:
The points system were used to base upon the prize money purses from the initiation of the championship series and continued till the 1967 championship series. Comparatively low points were paid for the races with lesser purses, as compared with races with bigger purses. |
